Health Insurance

Waiting months to see a specialist?
There is a better way

Shorter waiting times, better treatments, free choice of doctor — private health insurance offers what statutory health insurance cannot. But: not every tariff is equally good.

Privately insured — first-class medical care

Private health insurance gives you access to senior physician treatment, private rooms, and shorter waiting times. Whether you are an employee above the compulsory insurance threshold, self-employed, or a civil servant — we assess whether switching is worthwhile for you and find the plan that fits your budget and your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Health Insurance

Employees can switch if their gross annual income exceeds the compulsory insurance threshold (JAEG). In 2025, this is set at EUR 73,800. Self-employed individuals can switch to private health insurance (PKV) at any time.
Under the age of 55, switching back is possible if you become subject to compulsory insurance again (e.g., income falls below the JAEG or you take up employment). From age 55 onwards, switching back is very difficult.
Good tariffs build up age-related reserves. In addition, you can reduce your premiums through an internal tariff change (§ 204 VVG) without losing your age-related reserves.
You switch to a more affordable tariff within your existing PKV provider. Your age-related reserves and the health assessment from your original application are retained.
